Research Expertise and Interests:
Robert received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Wake Forest University in 2005 where he studied the photo-activation of caged biocides under the direction of Paul Jones. He then entered the field of structural biology as a NIH/NIST NRC postdoctoral fellow under John Marino (NIST) and Stuart Le Grice (NCI). Under their direction, Robert performed high resolution NMR studies on purine rich RNA/DNA hybrids derived from HIV-1 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae long-terminal repeat (LTR)-retrotransposon Ty3.
In January 2009, Robert joined the Macromolecular Structure and Function group and is establishing a research program in structural biology at the Hollings Marine Laboratory in Charleston, SC. Equipped with 700 MHz and 800 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers outfitted with cryoprobes, Robert focuses on the development and application of high resolution NMR methodology for the analysis of RNA structure in marine systems that have applicability to human health. In addition, a secondary focus entails the development of chemical probes to further elucidate understanding of these systems.
