Abstract

These notes are to provide an outline of a lecture presented at the Enrico Fermi Summer School at Nanoscale Science, held in Varenna in July 2000. They are not intended as a complete account of that lecture, but as an indication of the topics covered and a guide to some of the literature concerning those topics, particularly the literature describing experiments performed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, MD. Neither the references at NIST work in this field nor the references to work elsewhere are complete, but are meant to serve only as an indication of the kind of work going on in the field, and as an introduction to the literature on the subject.
