Under a program to develop a consumer-oriented rating methodology for residential cogeneration fuel cells, the performance of three systems was characterized in the NIST Residential Fuel Cell Test Facility. These systems differed with respect to the type of fuel cell used and their control scheme, whether constant power output, thermal load following, or electrical load following. The steady state performance of each system was measured with respect to electrical output level, cogeneration fluid flow rate and temperature, and ambient temperature. This paper will discuss the measured electrical and thermal performance of these three systems under steady state conditions and simulated residential thermal loads.
