Abstract
This is an update of a chapter in a published book: Chapter 41: Fabrication of Optics by Diamond Turning, Handbook of Optics: Fundamentals, Techniques, and Design, 2nd Ed., Vol. I, McGraw-Hill, Inc., NY, 1995, Sponsored by the Optical Society of America. This update of Chapter 41 has been prepared for the new edition of the handbook currently being edited by the Optical Society of America. The chapter in the 2nd Edition was written by Richard Rhorer and Chris Evans. Rhorer and Evans have prepared the update of this chapter on diamond turning for the new edition. At the time of the 2nd edition, Rhorer was an employee of Los Alamos National Laboratory and Evans was an employee of the National Institute of the Standards and Technology (NIST), now Rhorer is an employee of NIST and Evans is an employee of Zygo Corporation, Middlefield, Connecticut.The use of special machine tools with single-crystal diamond cutting tools to produce metal optics is called diamond turning. This chapter in the handbook describes the process, presents advantages of the process, and discusses materials and the machines for producing optics by diamond turning. The past decade has seen advances in precision machine technology and an increased understanding of the diamond tool/material interactions. Therefore the updated chapter refers to recent papers and includes extensive revisions of the section on diamond turnable materials and the diamond turning machines.Citation
