Abstract

An biofilm reactor was constructed that allows for real-time monitoring of the growth and removal of biofilms by monitoring the response of a quartz crystal mircrobalance (QCM) and a novel method of measuring the reflectance of light off the surface of the electrode. A model system based on biofilm growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) on the surface. Bioreactors were run for over 5 days. Removal of the biofilm by a disenfectant (chlorine) was also measured in real time. The bioreactor will allow us to rapidly measure the formation of a biofilm and conditions for its removal.
