Abstract

The BACnet standard has been expanded to include new object types that are intended for metering and demand management applications, as well as a web services specification that allows any outside service provider access to BAS data. Since the most common applications of BACnet are HVAC and lighting control in commercial and institutional buildings, and because HVAC and lighting are usually the main electric power consumers, buildings with BACnet control are well suited for electric demand reduction and metering applications. In addition, the BACnet web services specification provides a standard method for high-level communications with utilities and other service providers. This article describes the relevant BACnet objects and web services and discusses how they can be used in metering and utility-related applications. This article also highlights some of the nationwide activities related to automated demand response for commercial facilities.
