Building Confidence in Biological Measurements
Biology plays a pivotal role in some of the greatest scientific and technological breakthroughs that affect our everyday lives. But innovation comes with its own unique set of challenges, including our struggle to fully understand and predict biological processes that impact human health, the environment, energy policy, food and nutrition, and infrastructure.
The ‘omics’ revolution is responsible for establishing a new paradigm in the field of biology, providing large amounts of data about genes and proteins for individuals. Yet it’s still unclear how to reliably translate this crucial data into predictive therapeutic insights and successful applications for the benefit of society. Stem cell technologies, for example, often promise cures for injuries and chronic and acute diseases, but the development and wide adoption of these products is limited without firm knowledge of the mechanism of action.

To foster innovation and build confidence in quantitative biology and biomaterial measurements across government and industry in support of the bio-economy.
To address our nation’s need for measurement science and standards, and ensure that the U.S. maximizes the return on our national investment in the bioscience enterprise through the:
- Quantification of complex biological systems, materials, and processes;
- Development of standards, protocols, and reference materials and data; and
- Support of basic research in the advancement of measurement science and technology.
