ERP and Succession Planning

With the help of: Impact Washington

Tool Gauge & Machine Works designs metal and plastic injected mold aerospace parts.  They are located in Tacoma, Washington and have 110 employees.

The Challenge

The company initially contacted Impact Washington, part of the MEP National Network™, due to their reputation for providing quality employee training and consulting to Washington State manufacturers.  Impact Washington has worked on a few projects over the years with the company.  Due to the untimely death of the founding President, the company needed support with succession planning.  They also expressed a desire to be more efficient and increase profits and a need for a new ERP platform.

The biggest thing Impact Washington has done for us is to "be there".  When we needed support, had quick questions or needed redirection, we could contact them and they were right there for us.  They have been our safety net.  We have a relationship!  We trust them and their help and direction.  Thank you to the whole team.
— Debbie Lee, COO

MEP's Role

For the lean and ERP engagements, Impact Washington conducted a thorough needs assessment developing a current state of operations and future state of required goals.  For the succession plan, Impact Washington met with the family owners and the board determining their needs and desired outcomes.  With an agreement to proceed, Impact Washington introduced a clinical psychologist specializing in family owned business transition.  The company has now been able to embrace a lean continuous learning culture.  The ERP platform is implemented and operational which required change management coaching for management and employees to own their new accountabilities. The succession plan has resulted in: the addition of a new board member; the planned retirement of the interim President (mother); the retirement of the 2 sons retaining board positions; the promotion of an internal employee to COO with plan to promote to President; and the company has maintained its Silver status with a major aerospace company.  Revenue continues to increase annually with significant margin.
