Abstract
In December, 2008, the FBI provided MITRE with an extract of submissions of deceased persons. The submissions contain face images of subjects with multiple encounters over time. The type 10 records (face and SMT) are mostly frontal or near frontal face images, however, there are profile images in the collection as well. The purpose of this paper is to describe the basic characteristics of the facial images and other relevant image quality characteristics as they pertain to both collection practices and the understanding and evaluation of face recognition. Some preliminary observations and basic characteristics are presented. The goal is to establish a small but relevant dataset to enable subsequent analysis on image quality and temporal dimensions versus performance in more detail and to facilitate the application of additional tools and methods for comparative results. A second goal is to provide examples for training forensic examiners for various factors that are exemplified in the data.Citation
