  1. Cascading surge-protective devices: Coordination versus the IEC 664 staircase (1991)

    https://www.nist.gov/system/files/documents/pml/div684/Coordination_1991.pdf
Cascading Surge-Protective Devices: Coordination versus the IEC 664 Staircase François D. Martzloff National Institute of Standards and Technology Gaithersburg MD f.martzloff@ieee.org Jih-Sheng Lai Power Electronics Applications Center Knoxville TN Paper presented at PQA'91 Conference, Gif-sur-Yvette, France, 1991 Significance Part 8 – Coordination of cascaded SPDs The early nineties were marked by the emergence of concerns about the coordination of cascaded SPD in the midst of “common wisdom” that voltage surges impinging upon the service entrance of a building would inherently become less severe as they propagate and divide among the branch circuit of the installation. That perception was reinforced by the publication in 1980 of an IEC Standard on insulation coordination that figured prominently a “staircase” of descending surge voltage levels. As a r...

  4. Transient overvoltage protection in the undefined real world environment

    https://www.nist.gov/system/files/documents/pml/div684/Undefined_real.pdf
Transient Overvoltage Protection Coordination in the Undefined Real World Environment F.D. Martzloff Corporate Research and Development General Electric Company Reprint from paper presented at Powerconversion’79. Munich, September 1979 Significance Part 6: Textbooks, tutorials, and reviews Transient overvoltages are no longer an unknown threat to the successful application of power conversion equipment, and protective techniques and devices are available. The appropriate selection of these, however, remains a difficult task because the exact nature of transients in the real world is at best only statistically defined. Therefore, the choice involves technical and economic decisions based on calculated risks rather than deterministic optimization. This paper presents an overview or the origin of transient overvoltages and of current (1979)IEEE and IEC activities to identify and categorize transients. A brief ...

Coordinating Cascaded Surge Protection Devices: High-Low versus Low-High Jih-Sheng Lai Power Electronics Application Center Knoxville TN François D. Martzloff National Institute of Standards and Technology Gaithersburg MD f.martzloff@ieee.org Reprinted, with permission, from IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications IA-29, July/August 1993 First presented as ICPSD 91-28 at the IEEE-IAS Annual Meeting, Dearborn, 1991 Significance: Part 8 – Coordination of cascaded SPDs For a “cascade” of two MOV-based SPDs, the combined numerical modeling and the laboratory measurements cross-validate to provide information on the relationship of impinging waveform and amplitude, distance between the two SPDs, and relative values of the SPD limiting voltage. Results show that separate selection of the service entrance SPD and point-of-use SPD can produce an ine...

    https://materialsdata.nist.gov/bitstream/handle/11115/214/Metal%20Matrix%20Composites%20Vol%202.pdf?isAllowed=y&sequence=1
Metal-Matrix Composites John V. Foltz, Metallic Materials Branch, Naval Surface Warfare Center, White Oak Laboratory Charles M. Blackmon, Applied Materials Technology Branch, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Laboratory METAL-MATRIX COMPOSITES (MMCs) are a class of materials with poten- tial for a wide variety of structural and thermal management applications. Metal- matrix composites are capable of providing higher-temperature operating limits than their base metal counterparts, and they can be tailored to give improved strength, stiff- ness, thermal conductivity, abrasion resis- tance, creep resistance, or dimensional sta- bility. Unlike resin-matrix composites, they are nonflammable, do not outgas in a vacu- um, and suffer minimal attack by organic fluids such as fuels and solvents. The principle of incorporating a high- performance second phase into a conven- tional engineering material to produce...
