Mrunal Chapekar is currently a Senior Biochemist and Project Manager in the Project Management Office within the Technology Innovation Program (TIP) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). She serves as a technical manager for projects in biosciences and is involved in development of critical national need interest areas in biosciences. While at TIP, Mrunal continues to serve on the USP Nomenclature committee and the Multiagency Tissue Engineering Science (MATES) Working Group and is a member of ASTM International.
Prior to TIP, Mrunal served as both technical specialist and Project Manager in the Life Sciences Group within the Chemistry and Life Sciences Office of the Advanced Technology Program (ATP) at NIST for over ten years. Mrunal managed ATP projects in areas including tissue engineering, aquaculture, animal genetics, cell and gene therapy, biomaterials and vaccines. While at ATP, Mrunal completed the Department of Commerce COMSCI fellowship program and received the Bronze Medal from the US Department of Commerce in 2002 “In Recognition of the Leadership in the Field of Tissue Engineering in Fostering Public-Private Partnership.” During this period, Mrunal published a paper on Tissue Engineering: Challenges and Opportunities, Journal of Biomedical Material Research (Applied Biomaterials): 53: 617-620, 2000.
Prior to joining NIST, Mrunal was a post doctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health for seven years studying biology of cytokines and growth factors, and a reviewer at the Food and Drug Administration for nine years. While at FDA, Mrunal reviewed investigational new drug applications and licensing applications for products in cell and gene therapy, tissue engineering, and cytokine and growth factors and researched biocompatibility of materials. Mrunal published several research and review papers, served on the inter-center working groups in wound healing, xenotransplantation and tissue engineering, and received a number of FDA group recognition awards for her contributions.
Mrunal earned her B.Sc. in Chemistry and M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Mumbai, Mumbai, India.
