Technology Innovation Program (TIP)

THE TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION PROGRAM (TIP) was created as part of the America COMPETES Act, a comprehensive strategy to keep the United States the most innovative nation in the world.

TIP’s mission is to help U.S. businesses, institutions of higher education, and other organizations—such as national laboratories and nonprofit research institutes—support, promote, and accelerate innovation in the United States through high-risk, high-reward research in areas of critical national need. High-risk, high-reward research is research that:
    blue diamond icon  Has the potential for yielding transformational results with far-ranging or wide-ranging implications;
    blue diamond icon  Addresses critical national needs that support, promote, and accelerate innovation in the United States and is within NIST’s areas of technical competence; and
    blue diamond icon  Is too novel or spans too diverse a range of disciplines to fare well in the traditional peer-review process.

TIP is a unique contributor in the Nation’s strategy for transforming our ability to address societal challenges that if go unmet could adversely impact the overall function and quality of life of our Nation.
