Malcolm Baldrige
National Quality Award Ceremony
April 19, 2006
Remarks by Frank J. Sardone
President & CEO
Bronson Healthcare Group
Vice President Cheney,
Secretary Gutierrez, members of the Baldrige family, fellow award recipients,
and honored guests:
What a remarkable
honor it is for Bronson Methodist Hospital to be named a recipient of
the 2005 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
We are humbled by
the spotlight this achievement places on the state of Michigan, the great
city of Kalamazoo, and everyone at Bronson-our more than 4,000 employees,
medical staff, volunteers, retirees, and Board of Directors. All of these
people have worked so hard to be the best, because they know it's the
right thing to do for the patients and families we serve. It is through
their hard work and dedication that Bronson has achieved this outstanding
milestone.
Today the spotlight
also shines brightly on the healthcare industry. In 2001, the Institute
of Medicine made an urgent call for fundamental change to close the quality
gap in the American healthcare system. We believe that the Baldrige program
helps provide answers to this challenge. We are delighted by the growing
interest of the American Hospital Association, the Institute for Healthcare
Improvement, and hospitals and health systems throughout the country that
are embracing the Baldrige criteria as a framework to bring excellence
to our industry. It makes good business sense, and more importantly, it's
the right thing to do for our patients.
Bronson has been
on a journey to excellence for many years. We have, and will continue
to find, opportunities for improvement. We will continue to raise the
bar in everything we do. We pause today to celebrate this significant
milestone
but our journey continues. We now have the privilege
of sharing our story, as well as a great opportunity to learn more from
the experience of others.
Mr. Vice President,
Mr. Secretary, thank you for this tremendous honor. And to everyone at
Bronson, thank you for taking Bronson's values to heart and for making
quality, safety, service and compassion a habit in your daily interactions.
Bronson is a national leader because of you.
