Modeling of Alloy Solidification Using Coupled Cahn-Hilliard/Cahn-Allen Equations

During solidification of metal and alloys, the liquid-solid trans-formation front naturally takes on geometrically complex, time dependent shapes. These shapes determine the final state of compositional uniformity of solid products. Modeling these shapes has been greatly facilitated using an approach that treats the interface as diffuse and thus permits easier numerical solution to the diffusion equations for heat and solute. The approach will be sketched and results of simulations shown.
