SUPERRADIANCE INDUCED PLASMA FORMATION IN A COLD 85Rb RYDBERG GAS

A threshold behavior in a cold plasma formation process suggests the existence of a coherent process. The purpose of this presentation is to show that superradiant is responsible for this threshold behavior and suprerradiant cascade decay leads to the fast plasma formation process. The first observation of superradiant decay to atomic states will be presented. The observed superradiance signal is characterized by the density dependence, the delay as well as the amount of superradiance decay as a function of total number of atoms. Furthermore, superradiant cascade to higher angular momentum states and followed multibody collisions accelerate the fast plasma formation process.
