| NIST and Your Utilities |
NIST knows electrons--as individuals passing through microelectronic devices as well as in the great electrical rivers that flow through the nation's power grid. |
The basic utility industries, including gas
and electricity, continue a longtime relationship with researchers at
NIST.
The Electrical Systems Group of NIST's Electronics and Electrical Engineering Laboratory plays important roles in electrical power all the way from its generation to its measurement through household watt-hour meters. On the more arcane side of the world of electronics, NIST also develops ultra-high precision measurement techniques including a voltage measurement method that counts electrons, and the charge they carry, one electron a time. In addition to its place in the electricity arena, NIST also has been playing important roles in the natural gas industry by developing reliable methods of measuring vast amounts of liquefied products from natural gas as these fluids make their way from points of production to points of use. |
