Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Ceremony Remarks by Bob Barnett, Executive Vice President, Motorola, Inc., and Vice President Cheney, Secretary Evans, members of the Baldrige family, distinguished guests: It is an honor for me to accept this prestigious award on behalf of the 14,000 associates worldwide in Motorola’s Commercial, Government and Industrial Solutions Sector – which we call CGISS. This award is a wonderful testament to them as well as our other stakeholders – especially our customers – for whom our vision is to be the trusted integrator and leading provider of innovative communication and information solutions for public sector and business-critical enterprise customers. Motorola is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year. CGISS is the oldest continuing business within the corporation – the heart and soul – and we are proud of our heritage and our record of service to our customers and the public. Our associates know that what we do, and the products we make, enable our public safety, government and business customers to achieve their mission. As you know, we are at the forefront of Homeland Security in assisting our first responders. In addition, our Motorola team is currently meeting the critical communications needs of our military personnel in Iraq. And, as we move into the reconstruction phase, we are prepared to do considerably more. Our performance excellence journey passed a significant milestone in 1988, when Motorola, led by Bob Galvin, then Motorola Chairman and who is with us this afternoon, received the very first Baldrige Award. Yet, as time passed, there was a growing sense in CGISS that we could be even better. So in 1999 we rededicated ourselves to driving performance excellence through the revised and more rigorous Baldrige criteria. For the past four years we have identified opportunities to improve our processes and business results, made changes and closed gaps. From that effort, we now have many best-in-class, best-in-world processes and results – in customer satisfaction, market share and customer-delivered quality, to name a few. We applied for the Award, not with the idea of winning, but with the goal of receiving the evaluation of the Baldrige examiners. That evaluation was comprehensive, professional and insightful. It reinforced where we were strong, and provided valuable information on areas where we could improve – making it perhaps the most cost-effective, value-added business consultation available anywhere in the world today. And the fundamental values we hold within our own organization – which are constant respect for people, and uncompromising integrity in everything we do – were reflected in every experience we had with the Baldrige examiners. That is a tribute to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the American Society for Quality, as well as the Baldrige examiners and panel of judges – and we want to thank you for your leadership in creating a framework for pursuing performance excellence. Along with Branch-Smith Printing and SSM Health Care, we all know, first hand, the challenge to achieve world-class performance excellence. It is hard work, requiring focus, dedication and persistence. The Baldrige Award is a great honor, but also a reinforcing milestone along the journey of doing the right things right. We again thank you for this Award, and, speaking for the talented and dedicated Motorola associates here today who made performance excellence come alive, we commit to raise even higher our performance excellence within Motorola CGISS. Thank you all, and thank you Motorolans, of whom I am very, very proud! created on 5/21/03 |
