"Updated building standards allow me to confidently use advanced materials in my designs."

Construction is an ancient art, yet it keeps improving. NIST brings the tools of science and engineering to the art. Working with the construction industry and other government agencies, NIST researchers study how to make buildings safer and more durable, while improving performance.

NIST develops tools like fire simulation software, ways to measure the earthquake resistance of buildings, and tests to predict the lifetimes of construction materials. Such tools encourage better building codes and standards based on scientific findings.
