Chemical Science and Technology Laboratory

The Chemical Science and Technology Laboratory is the primary reference laboratory in the United States for chemical measurements. Entrusted with developing, maintaining, advancing, and enabling the chemical measurement system for the United States, we thereby enhance industry's productivity and competitiveness, establish comparability of measurements to facilitate equity of global trade, and improve public health, safety, and environmental quality.

We perform cutting-edge research in measurement science; develop and maintain measurement methods, standards, and reference data; and develop models for chemical, biochemical, and physical properties and processes. The technologies and services we provide help U.S. industry meet the broad range of international measurement requirements and compete in global markets. Our programs cover a wide range of disciplines represented by our 14 program areas: nanotechnology, microelectronics, biomaterials, environmental technology and systems, international measurement standards, health and medical products and services, food and nutritional products, data and informatics, energy, transportation, industrial and analytical instruments and services, chemical and allied products, biotechnology, and forensics.

Through a strong commitment to basic research and by leading advances in critical areas of measurement science, we continue to meet current national needs and are poised to meet future needs.
