The Diversity Crisis in Higher Education--A great danger to our Nation's competitiveness

Internationally known for his outstanding research in the computational and mathematical sciences, Dr. Tapia is a prominent leader in education and outreach programs that address equity in education. In this talk Dr. Tapia will share his journey from growing up in a Chicano household in Los Angeles to his visit to the White House, which commended him with the National Medal of Science in 2011. A passionate advocate for the topic, Dr. Tapia uses data and observations to uncover the factors that result in reduced participation of underrepresented minorities in science, engineering, and mathematics fields of study. Dr. Tapia will share his viewpoint on how this underrepresentation endangers the health of the nation, and present his perspectives on how we can begin to address these obstacles.
