'Take Our Daughters To Work Day' at NIST on April 26
Exposes Girls to Careers in Science and Technology

Hands-On Demonstrations in NIST Labs OPEN TO PRESS

The Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology will host a special day of hands-on activities on Thursday, April 26, in honor of "Take Our Daughters to Work Day." Media are invited to attend the events as local girls and boys, ages 9-16, participate in demonstrations involving DNA diagnostics, semiconductors, biotechnology, chemistry and more.

"Take Our Daughters To Work Day" at NIST exposes girls to adult mentors, giving them a glimpse of their own potential, and helps them to see the importance of education and the possibilities for exciting careers in science and engineering. Studies indicate that young girls tend to receive less attention than boys in school and suffer from lower expectations. One notable consequence is the under-representation of women in mathematics and science professions.

Date: Thursday, April 26, 2001

Time:
1:00-1:45 p.m.
1:45-2:30 p.m.

Place:
NIST, 100 Bureau Dr., Gaithersburg, Md. (Take I-270 North to Exit 10 or I-270 South to Exit 11)

Hands-On Demonstrations in the NIST Laboratories:

Glassblowing, chemistry (participants will make gel), DNA diagnostics, measuring force, chemical analysis by spectroscopy, semiconductors (participants will watch one "grow"), biotechnology (harvesting protein using a gene from a jellyfish).
