The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) invite reporters to attend a roundtable with local civic and business leaders as they discuss “Improving America’s Competitiveness” with NIST Director William Jeffrey.
President Bush’s fiscal year 2007 budget request and his American Competitiveness Initiative (ACI) are positioning NIST to play a key role in advancing our nation’s innovation and competitiveness. For FY 2007, the president has requested $535 million—a more than 24 percent increase above the current funding level—for NIST’s core activities (laboratory research and facility upgrades) and a major research initiative including projects in nanotechnology, hydrogen research, quantum information science, bioimaging and cyber security. The centerpiece of the ACI is a $50 billion investment to double over the next 10 years the funding for three key federal agencies that support basic research programs in the physical sciences and engineering—the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy's Office of Science, and NIST.
