Commerce Secretary Don Evans will give opening remarks at the Quest for Excellence XIV Conference featuring the 2001 winners of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Secretary Evans will highlight the importance of excellence and responsibility in strengthening the nation's enterprises and as a key to America's overall security and success.

The 2001 winners are Clarke American Checks, Inc. (San Antonio, Texas); Pal's Sudden Service (Kingsport, Tenn.); Chugach School District (Anchorage, Alaska); Pearl River School District (Pearl River, New York); and the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

The first morning of the conference will include a discussion by the 2001 Baldrige Award winners' senior leaders on how each organization addresses public responsibility and citizenship, one of the Baldrige Award's 11 core values. Throughout the three-day conference, senior leaders and others from each of the five 2001 Baldrige Award recipients will give presentations and answer questions about their best practices and lessons learned on their journey to performance excellence.

Reporters should register at the Convention Registration Desk on the Lobby Level of the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. For further information, visit the Baldrige National Quality Program Web site at www.quality.nist.gov.
