Nobel Prize Winner to Talk on Super-Cold Atoms
| William D. Phillips, co-winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics for his
work in cooling and trapping atoms, will speak to the National Organization for the
Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers in San Diego next week.
Phillips is leader of the Laser Cooling and Trapping
Group at the National Institute of Standards and
Technology. The talk is part of the NOBCChE Distinguished Scientist Series. Reporters
are invited to cover the talk.
| When: | Wednesday, April 7, 1999, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
| Where: | San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina, Marina E
| What: | Phillips will discuss the development of laser cooling and trapping of
atoms at temperatures just a few microkelvins above absolute zero. He will describe how
these techniques have led to dramatic advances in physics such as an exotic new state of
matter and development of an atom laser. Laser cooling and trapping of atoms already has been applied to numerous areas of science and engineering, including atomic clocks and atom interferometers. Visit http://physics.nist.gov/News/contents.html on the World Wide Web for more information on Phillips research. Reporters planning to attend the talk should contact Linda Joy at (301) 975-4403.
