Media Advisory
Joint NIST-NCI Workshop to Explore Use
of Small-Scale Science to Reveal Cancers

The Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Institutes of Health's National Cancer Institute invite reporters to learn how the smallest of technological soldiers are being enlisted in the fight against one of the world's biggest health problems, cancer.

Research projects to be discussed at the "Nanotechnology in Early Detection of Cancer Workshop" include:

using lasers to stretch cells to differentiate between the stiff cytoskeletons of normal cells and the softer structures of malignant cells;

detecting a single molecule using an engineered membrane pore;

precise detection of tiny DNA segments with nanoparticle probes that may eliminate the need for PCR reproduction of the genetic material;

minuscule devices for the detection of submicroscopic and molecular precancerous lesions; and

new tools to determine cancer risk at the molecular level.

For more information, visit the workshop web site at http://www.nanotechnology2001.com/.

Date:
Thursday, Aug. 30 and Friday, Aug 31, 2001
