EBIT Collector

The Collector is the site where the beam electrons are eventually dumped. It contains an internal magnet to cancel out the fringing field of the main superconducting magnet, thereby allowing the electron beam to freely expand until it hits the interior walls of the collector which are cooled with an independent flow of liquid nitrogen. The collector is held at a potential of up to +2000 volts relative to the electron gun. The collector in the NIST EBIT rests on a small high-voltage platform so that in the future it can be connected to the electron gun platform allowing the EBIT to be upgraded to produce higher energy electron beams.
