International Affairs Officer

Ms. Magdalena Navarro presently works as an International Affairs Officer in the Office of International and Academic Affairs (OIAA).  She has among her responsibilities managing the U.S. technical review process of the U.S.-Israel Bi-National Research and Development (BIRD) Foundation and the U.S.-Israel-Jordan Industrial Development (TRIDE) Program. She also assists NIST staff in the preparation of bilateral or multilateral international agreements with national metrology institutes (NMIs) or other international bodies for research collaboration. 

Before joining OIAA, she was a physical scientist since 1993 in the Optical Technology Division of the NIST Physics Laboratory working in the areas of photometry and radiometry.  In 1990 she joined NIST as a biologist and worked in the Fire Measurement and Research Division of the Building and Fire Research Laboratory (BFRL) in the area of toxicology of combustion products. 

Prior joining NIST, Ms. Navarro was a research assistant from 1987 to 1990 in the Division of Intramural Clinical and Biological Research at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) where she did research on alcohol abuse and panic disorder. 

Ms. Magdalena Navarro completed her B.S. in Biology at the University of Maryland in 1987 and finished her M.S. in Management of Information Technology at George Washington University in 2000.  She has taken numerous courses in others areas of interest such as statistics, biostatistics, and applied physics.  She has author or co-author numerous scientific publications. 

Ms. Navarro has been active in numerous committees at NIST. She proudly served as the NIST Diversity Board Chair in 1998. She was the founder and president of the Association of NIST Hispanic Americans (ANHA) from 1996-1997. In 1994 she was president of the Standards Committee for Women (SCW) and during her tenure the name of the committee changed to the NIST Committee for Women (NCW) and Take Our Daughter To Work Day (TODTWD) activity commenced at NIST. She has held numerous other positions at NCW, ANHA, NIST Diversity Board and the NIST Child Care Center.  She is very involved in her kids schools and volunteers at other Montgomery County Public Schools to promote an interest in science and specifically women in science.
