National Program Office

The National Program Office (NPO) was established at NIST by the Secretary of Commerce to coordinate the implementation of the NSTIC across the public and private sectors.  The NPO works closely with academia, industry, advocates and government agencies, as well as the White House, to:

  • Promote private-sector involvement and engagement;
  • Support interagency collaboration and coordinate interagency efforts associated with achieving programmatic goals;
  • Build consensus on policy frameworks necessary to achieve the vision;
  • Identify areas for the government to lead by example in developing and supporting the Identity Ecosystem, particularly in the Executive Branch’s role as a provider and validator of key credentials;
  • Actively participate within and across relevant public- and private-sector fora; and
  • Assess progress against the goals, objectives, and milestones of the Strategy and the associated implementation activities.

The NPO coordinates the implementation of NSTIC within federal agencies, and has close working relationships with the Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Homeland Security, Department of the Treasury, General Services Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, and the United States Postal Service and others.

The NPO actively seeks opportunities for interagency collaboration, partnerships with the private sector and individuals, and multi-disciplinary and multi-sector contributions while providing leadership across the Federal Government.

The NPO is housed within National Institute of Standards and Technology at the Department of Commerce.
