BIO
KC Morris is a computer scientist in the
Manufacturing Systems
Integration Division. Her work involves methods and mechanisms
for supporting the specification and development of information
interface standards and the testing of those standards. Currently
she is working on projects to develop
and test XML Schema-based interfaces. Earlier in her career she
worked on STEP,
a.k.a. ISO 10303 The Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data.
STEP is a family of ISO standards for product data. She was a primary
contributor to the development and
validation of STEP's implementation mechanisms. She has architected
and contributed to the development of numerous prototypes of the STEP
Data Access Interface (SDAI), including NIST's public-domain STEP Toolset.
KC has been a technical contributor to the ISO working groups
developing STEP and to several industrial consortiums, including FIATECH, PDES, Inc. and National
Industrial Information Infrastructure Protocols Program (NIIIP).
Her current research interests include data sharing for engineering and
manufacturing including product data management
and techniques for managing and testing such systems. She came to NIST
after
receiving a Master of Science Degree in Computer Science from Illinois
Institute of Technology in 1988.

PROJECTS
- Project lead for efforts to create tools for
developing XML Schemas to support system integration. See the project summary
and listing
of available tools. (2004+)
- Contributor to the AEX (Automating Equipment
Information Exchange) Testbed that is working with members of the FIATECH consortium's AEX project
to produce a set of XML schemas that support capital facility
equipment engineering, procurement, construction, and operations and
maintenance work processes. (2003-2005)
- Co-Principal Investigator for NIST's Testability of
Interaction-Driven Manufacturing Systems (TIMS) project, which
developed software testing and design-for-testability methods to cope
with the growing complexity of manufacturing system software.
(1998-2002)
- Principal Investigator for NIST in the National
Information Infrastructure Protocols Consortium. The NIIIP effort
builds on existing standards (including STEP, OMG, and Internet) to
enable the virtual enterprise. NIST has contributed to interfaces for
STEP-enabled applications to operate in environments supported by
emerging infrastructural standards. (1994-1997)
- Architect and developer for the NIST STEP Class Library software
which supports STEP developers and the standardization of STEP
implementation methods.
- Technical contributor to information technology
standards related to manufacturing and engineering. Active in the
development of the STEP Data Access Interface and the C++ and IDL
bindings for that interface.
- Pricipal investigator for the DARPA-sponsored
Persistent Object Base (POB) Testbed (1991-1995). The testbed project
was established to evaluate research projects, to assess requirements
for POB technology with respect to manufacturing and engineering, and
to identify areas where new standards are appropriate. NIST work
focused on the development of the STEP Data Access Interface (SDAI) in
the context of POB technology.
