Timothy Brewer

Tim M. Brewer has been a Research Chemist in the Surface and Microanalysis Science Division at NIST since 2007. He graduated from Millikin University in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He received his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Clemson University in 2007 with an emphasis in Glow Discharge Spectrometry. He joined NIST as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in 2007. His professional background is in mass spectrometry, with an emphasis in atmospheric pressure mass spectrometry. His research encompasses multiple areas, including fundamental ion chemistry measurements of desorption mass spectrometry techniques, sensitivity enhancements for secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and trace explosives detection. His SIMS research has focused on fundamental secondary ion yield enhancements through the addition of glycerol. His explosives research has focused on fundamental ion formation of explosives under atmospheric conditions and increased specificity of explosives detection through the investigation of various dopants. Recently, he has focused on competitive ionization of explosive molecules with atmospheric sampling glow discharge (ASGDI), desorption electrospray ionization (DESI), electrospray ionization (ESI) and ion mobility spectrometry (IMS).
