Large-Scale Coordinate Metrology Group

Welcome

The Large-Scale Coordinate Metrology (LSCM) Group of the Precision Engineering Division (PED), one of five divisions of the Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory (MEL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), has the primary mission to provide U.S. industry practical access to the unit of length through high accuracy calibrations.  The group specializes in measurements on objects approximately one meter in length up to kilometers.  The LSCM Group also actively supports national and international dimensional metrology standards with an emphasis on rigorous uncertainty evaluation.  The LSCM Group also performs research into advancing the state of the art of coordinate dimensional metrology and develops method to quantify the performance evaluation of dimensional measurement instrumentation.

LSCM Group Activities

LSCM Group Activities: Calibrations and Special Tests Calibrations and Special Tests — Our objective is to provide US industry with very high accuracy length calibrations with rapid turnaround time.
LSCM Group Activities: National and International Standards National and International Standards — The LSCM Group leverages its expertise in dimensional metrology through participating in national and international standards development.
LSCM Group Activities: Research Activities Research Activities — Our goal is to continuously improve the accuracy of our measurements, develop new characterization techniques, and provide industry with technical information.

Programs/Projects
Complex Geometry Instrumentation and Standards — This project will promote innovation and a reduction of time to market by developing calibration capabilities and standards for measuring geometrically complex surfaces. Complex surfaces are …

Dimensional Metrology Program — Not content to rest on its record of measuring a meter to an accuracy of one part in 100 million, NIST continues to improve the quality of dimensional measurements - an effort that means huge …

Improvements in Calibrations and Uncertainty Evaluation — Effective measurement services require that ongoing research into improvements to high accuracy calibrations be continually done. This research focuses on improving either high value components or …
