MEL Experts Lecture at ASME Seminar

MEL researchers, Ted Vorburger and Brian Renegar, delivered invited lectures at American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) B46 Surface Quality Seminar, held in Romulus Michigan on April 24, 2009. The purpose of the half-day seminar was to broaden practitioners’ understanding of surface quality concepts contained in the B46.1 standard, Surface Texture, Roughness, Waviness, and Lay (to be released later this year), and give them a context within which the standards will provide the greatest value to them.  Brian’s lecture was about recent changes to the standard and was entitled, “B46.1-2009 What’s New?” Ted’s lecture was about the work of the counterpart ISO organizations to the ASME B46 Committee—Working Groups under Technical Committee 213 on Dimensional and Geometrical Product Specifications and Verification—and was entitled, “ISO Standards Update.”  Altogether about 60 technical people from industry attended the seminar.

MEL Researcher Focus of Podcast Interview

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Committee B46 on the Classification and Designation of Surface Qualities (ASME B46.1) is in the final stages of revising the current surface texture national standard, ASME B46.1-2002 Surface Texture (Surface Roughness, Waviness, and Lay).  MEL researcher Brian Renegar is chair of the Committee’s Editorial Working Group, which is responsible for revising the standard, and has been working for the past two years on the revision. The ASME committee is now interfacing with the media, magazines, and various dimensional metrology companies to spread the word about the availability of the new standard later this year as ASME B46.1-2009.  One of those, Quality Magazine, learned about the upcoming standard and conducted an audio interview with Brian to discuss the B46.1 Committee, the changes to the new standard, and anticipated future developments.  Brian’s audio interview with Maggie McFadden, a managing editor of Quality Magazine, is now available online as a downloadable MP3 file.  The interview may be found by at the magazine’s website: http://www.qualitymag.com/CDA/HTML/BNP_GUID_9-5-2006_A_10000000000000520297  and clicking on the “Revision to the B46.1 Standard on Surface Texture Measurement” link.  Alternatively, the direct link to the MP3 file can also be found at: http://bnpmedia.vo.llnwd.net/o25/QUAL/Podcasts/09-B46_Committee.mp3.

MEL Participation in “Regional, State, & Local Initiatives in Nanotechnology” Workshop

The organizers of the “Regional, State, & Local Initiative in Nanotechnology” workshop held April 1-3, 2009 at the Skirvin Hotel in Oklahoma City, OK invited Michael Postek, MEL Division Chief,  to participate in the workshop.  Mike participated as a panel member in the Nanotechnology Research and Manufacturing Infrastructure Development. The National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) and the National Science Foundation (NSF), in conjunction with the Oklahoma Nanotechnology Initiative sponsored this interagency workshop. The workshop was a component of the ongoing efforts by members of the Nanoscale Science, Engineering and Technology (NSET) Subcommittee, an interagency body responsible for coordination of the NNI and support of its goals. Dr. Mihail Roco, Senior Advisor for Nanotechnology at NSF, and Jim Mason, Director of the Oklahoma Nanotechnology Initiative, chaired the workshop. The workshop brought together specialists from industry, academia, regional, state, & local initiatives, and representatives of the Federal government to discuss how nanotechnology-related organizations can be more effective by working together to develop concrete ideas for improving the outcome of our research, education, and economic development efforts. http://www.nano.gov/nanoregional.html
