Albert Wavering is Acting Deputy Director of the Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory (MEL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).  As Acting Deputy Director, he is responsible for Laboratory operations as delegated by the MEL Director, and assists the MEL Director and Division Chiefs in establishing the strategic direction and formulating the technical program portfolio of the Laboratory.  MEL promotes innovation and the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturing through measurement science, measurement services, and critical technical contributions to standards, with a staff of 174 federal employees, approximately 100 guest researchers, unique world-class metrology facilities and testbeds, and a total annual operating budget of approximately $50M.
 
Wavering has served previously as Chief of the Intelligent Systems Division and Leader of the Machine Systems Group in MEL, leading and conducting research to advance intelligent systems, robotics, automation, and industrial control security.  He is also a co-chair of the coordinating group for High Confidence Software and Systems within the US interagency Networking and Information Technology Research and Development program.  Wavering joined NIST in 1985 as a mechanical engineer after obtaining his M.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois.  He received his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech in 1983.  He is a recipient of the Department of Commerce Gold Medal and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers’ Philip R. Marsilius Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award. He is a Fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and a graduate of the Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government Senior Executive Fellows program.
