Abstract

Production planning is a complex problem that is typically decomposed into decisions carried out at different control levels. Production planning methods employed often assume a static environment; therefore, the plans developed may not be feasible if shop floor events change dynamically. The premise of this paper is that, in a stochastic environment, a simulation model that is updated with prevailing shop floor data can be used to evaluate and validate a proposed plan. As such, this paper proposes a framework to evaluate the feasibility of production plans at one decision level using a simulation model of the system at a lower level. The results of simulation execution are used to improve the plan. This approach is demonstrated with an assembly plant where the aggregate plan is evaluated using discrete event simulation (DES) of shop floor operations and resources allocation to production activities constrained by the aggregate plan. We also discuss standardized integration interfaces required between simulations and production planning tools.
