Abstract

NIST’s Engineering Laboratory (EL-NIST) hosted “Operation Tomodachi – Fire Research” on March 16-18, 2015 in Gaithersburg, MD USA. Tomodachi means friendship in Japanese. This workshop was organized by Dr. Samuel L. Manzello of EL-NIST in partnership with the Japan Association for Fire Science and Engineering (JAFSE). This was a formal continuation of the kickoff meeting held at EL- NIST in June, 2011. Due to the success of the kickoff meeting, EL-NIST signed a Statement of Intent with JAFSE to hold two more workshops, the first held in Tokyo in 2012 (see Manzello et al., [1] for a summary of that workshop), and this workshop held at EL- NIST, March 16-18, 2015. The objective of the March, 2015 workshop at EL-NIST was to: (1) develop scientific knowledge and translate it to building codes and standards that will be of use to both countries to reduce the devastation caused by unwanted fires, (2) provide a forum for next generation researchers to present their work in order to develop research collaborations, (3) and allow participants a chance to visit EL-NIST’s newly constructed National Fire Research Laboratory (NFRL).
