Abstract

The interactions of electromagnetic fields with matter are described by means of the polarization and magnetization of the material under study. Analogous to the way that magnetofluidics seeks to exploit magnetic interactions for sensing and manipulating magnetic materials in microfluidic systems, dielectrofluidics exploits interactions based on the sample polarization, which occur due to local charge separation. We present a microfluidic-based system for quantitative measurement of the dielectric response of chemical and biological samples over a wide range of frequencies up to 100 GHz, in order to gain an understanding of fundamental electromagnetic interactions at the molecular and cellular levels.
