Abstract

A question of fundamental importance in multiferroic materials, such as BiFeO3, is whether the canted moment arising from the Dzyalozhinski-Moriya coupling is switchable with the application of an electric field. Since this canted moment is weak, directly probing it has been problematic. In this work, we have used a model ferromagnet (Co0.1Fe0.9) - BiFeO3 heterostructure to prove that the canted moment does indeed reverse direction with the application of a bipolar electric field. We have used a combination of spatially resolved magnetic imaging coupled with electric field dependent ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy to provide direct evidence for such a reversal. This constitutes an important step toward robust repeatable and non-volatile voltage induced 180° magnetization switching in thin film multiferroic heterostructures.
