Title: Ranging Performance Evaluation of a Laser Scanner

Abstract: Large volume laser scanners are used for a variety of purposes, including dimensional metrology of large artifacts, digitization and reverse engineering, as well as historical preservation and archiving. In evaluating the performance of laser scanners, we seek to understand and quantify how well these instruments can reproduce geometries of objects in their field of view. This paper particularly focuses on evaluating the ranging performance of a commercial laser scanner. We begin by introducing the reader to the various ranging technologies employed by laser scanners and we briefly describe the technology employed by the particular scanner under test. There has been ongoing work within the ASTM E57 committee in the area of range testing, and this will be briefly outlined. We discuss the use of contrast targets and describe the design of our ranging tests. Finally, we present test results and discuss future work.
