Abstract

Distributed manufacturing requires an agile supply chain which reduces time to market and responds efficiently to changes. Our research aims to enable agile supply chain by enabling efficient supply chain assemblies and reconfigurations. A key enabling factor to dynamic supply networks is efficient communications of manufacturing service capability (MSC) information between customers and suppliers such as information about production processes, quality, capacity, and digital information processing ability. Presently, MSC information is communicated with limited representation in various proprietary terminologies. Such limitation impedes efficient communications of MSC information. In our past work, we have shown that MSC information communication can be enhanced with the interjection of a formal, ontology-based model of MSC information – the reference MSC model. However, consistent and quality development of the reference MSC model is a challenge since manufacturing is a large and evolving domain. Therefore, we propose to utilize the notion of (information modeling) design patterns or more specifically ontology design patterns (ODPs) to develop and maintain such MSC model. This paper represents the first stage of research toward that direction where we are interested in the principles and techniques to design patterns development. It investigates the prior works in design patterns from several domains including data modeling, software analysis, and ontology modeling. Our first contribution is the analysis of the principles and techniques to design patterns development from these domains that has not been available. The main contribution is the extension of these principles and techniques from these domains to more specifically ODPs development for the reference MSC model. Our conclusion is that further works are necessary to develop streamline processes, methodologies, and tools to assist with the ODPs development. We provide research directions to that end.
