Abstract

The interpretation of results from chromatographic measurements can often be augmented with an appropriate mathematical treatment of the solute retention that is observed. The goal of treatment is to make the resulting metric as independent of the instrument as possible. A typical situation that arises from analysis by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry is that the library search routine produces "hits" that are nonsensical. The correct interpretation of the mass spectrum must then be done manually, and the data should be augmented by additional analytical techniques. The specific techniques that should be used must be determined on a case by case basis by a qualified person. One additional datum that is typically already present in gas chromatography with mass spectrometry detection is chromatographic retention. The raw datum from a chromatographic measurement is a retention time, tr, of each eluted peak, and a corresponding intensity.
