Abstract

Securing water sources of sufficient quality and quantity poses a major barrier to growing communities. Major investments in capitol and materials are planned in water treatment and distribution system infrastructure over the next several decades, but substantive research and engineering questions must be addressed in order to make sound decisions in system maintenance, improvement, and use of new technology with confidence. The joint NIST/VT workshop "Measuring up to Sustainable Water" identified opportunities and knowledge gaps in three critical areas including the following: 1) Infrastructure, 2) Membranes, and 3) Emerging Contaminants. More than 85 invited attendees participated in the workshop from academia, industry, and federal institutions. The overall goal was to develop a prioritization for fundamental and applied research at federal institutions and entities funding research in sustainable water. More specifically, for the selected topic areas, the key question was “What are we concerned about, what do we want to measure, and how?” Attendees were provided with a clear agenda in advance of the workshop, which allowed time for presentations, sharing of new information and structured discussion. Results of the workshop are described herein for the Infrastructure and Membranes track of the workshop, whereas results and discussion from the Emerging Contaminants track will be used informally to guide future efforts and structured discussion within NIST and VT.
