Abstract

A new single fiber tensile test method using the Kolsky bar is being utilized to investigate fiber properties under high strain rate conditions. Since fiber tensile properties exhibit broad, dispersed distributions, a large number of test specimens are required to conduct a meaningful statistical analysis. It is an important experimental challenge to perform high throughput tests under high strain rate conditions when one needs to grip a single fiber in a reliable and reproducible manner. This presentation investigates the feasibility of three fiber gripping methods for application in a high strain rate test. One method consisted of adhering a fiber to a template following the prodecure described in ASTM C1557-03. The other two methods involve directly clamping a fiber using PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) and rubber. In preliminary tests under quasi-static loading conditions when gluing a fiber and directly gripping a fiber by PMMA, tensile failure strains of PPTA fibers showed significant differences at the shorter gauge lengths compared to the longer gauge lengths. Graphical statistical analyses confirm these differences in failure strains.
