|Abstract:||Reports by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (Gann 2005), the UK-based Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) (Roberts 2002), and a national workshop on state-of-the-art of structural-fire engineering (Kodur et al. 2007) all have called for the development of performance-based standards and code provisions as an alternative to prescriptive methods. One of the key research needs identified was the development of simple structural-fire analysis tools that are conducive to code-based design. Prescriptive codes, which are the current state of practice in the US, state how a building is to be constructed to resist exposure to unwanted fire, and the application of these codes typically falls under the responsibilities of the architect. These provisions focus on individual member behavior without consideration of how the member interacts with the surrounding structure, and few, if any, calculation-based techniques are used to estimate the response of loaded members in a building frame to fire. On the other hand, performance-based provisions state how the structure is to perform when subjected to a wide range of fire conditions and scenarios.|
