Abstract: The inclusion of phase-separated rubber particles in a brittle thermoset matrix has been shown to increase the Mode I fracture energies for a wide range of model and commercial adhesives. Our recent efforts combine these two approaches by comparing the morphology of the fracture surface before and after heating to assess degree of plastic deformation that occurred during the toughening process. In this presentation, an effort is made to combine matrix relaxation after heating with Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy imaging (LSCM) to quantify the relaxation of the microstructure within the toughened zone as a function of the length of the whitened zone.
