Abstract

The development of firefighter elevators and special application egress elevators is reviewed. Recent activities of the elevator industry and NIST to develop standards and building code requirements for elevators for use by the fire service and by occupants during fires is summarized. Current thinking on design, special features, and evacuation protocols is presented. Addressing the special needs of people with mobility limitations is discussed. This article is provided as part of a set of related articles on this topic written by industry and regulatory officials engaged in the development of this technology and the standards that will apply.
