Flammability Properties of Poly(methyl methacrylate)-Single Walled Carbon Nanotube Nanocomposites

Abstract

Recent measurements on polymer nanocomposites filled with multiple-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) have indicated that these nanoparticles are highly effective fire retardants at low loading (1 wt.-%). We report here similar results for single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). A network structure of nanotubes exists in both SWNT and MWNT nanocomposites throughout the burning process. The nanotube network suppresses bubbling and associated polymer convective flow and shields the polymer matrix from external radiant heat and heat feedback from the flame.
