Abstract

This study is part of a wider research program aimed at developing an assessment methodology of waste-containing concrete. This methodology is developed based on the study of mortars containing an experimental waste: MSWIFA (Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash). The properties of the mortars studied are: performance characteristics, environmental impact and durability. In this paper, we describe the experimental work undertaken to study the hydration of cement mixes in the presence of MSWIFA. The physical and chemical characteristics of the MSWIFA used were first studied. Chemical analyses, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations were performed. The hydration products formed in a cement paste in the presence of MSWIFA were also studied. X-ray diffractometry was performed on the pure cement paste and on the cement pastes containing MSWIFA. The comparison of the diffractograms obtained has allowed us to identify the main hydrates formed due to the presence of MSWIFA. Lastly, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) was performed on the pure cement paste and on the cement paste containing MSWIFA. These tests enabled the influence of MSWIFA on the microstructure of cement paste to be studied.
