Abstract

Iron deposition on ordered and disordered GaN (0001) surfaces result in dramatically different magnetic over-layer characteristics. On the ordered surface, nitrogen rapidly desorbs upon Fe deposition and a magnetically disordered film is produced. Concurrently a displaced gallium film localizes at the interface protecting the substrate. The disordered surface has a Ga rich surface acting as a nitrogen diffusion barrier protecting the substrate from iron exposure and furthermore, it induced island like growth. The Fe islands coalesced at approximately 12 coverage and the resulting film is found to have an average magnetic moment of 2.02 in good agreement with bulk
