Abstract: Force calibrations obtainable at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) continue to focus on extracting the maximum performance from the primary force standard deadweight machines, the ratiometric electrical readout systems and the environmental factors pertinent to each series of measurements.  Issues to be reviewed date from the original series of National Bureau of Standards (NBS) Circulars to current methods of force transducer characterization.  Much effort still is directed at minimizing force machine-transducer interaction to isolate the true performance of the device under calibration
