Abstract

This TechNote has been written as a guide to the operation of and applications for the NIST Capacitor Ratio Bridge (CRB). The theory, design, and operating principles of the CRB, sources of measurement error, and principal applications are discussed in Part I. This part includes a description of magnetic, capacitive, microphonic, grounding, and other error sources, current comparator theory, and principles of the error correction circuitry of the bridge. Also discussed are the principal uses of the CRB for measurement of capacitance, resistance, inductance, and the ratios of voltage transformers and dividers. Part II is written as an operating manual describing the step-by-step procedures for setting up and performing the measurements described in Part I. It also includes tests to verify accurate operation of the bridge and a Troubleshooting Guide to provide guidance in overcoming measurement problems. Uncertainty analyses are provided for the principal measurement applications.
